In mid-19th century England, an era full of celebrated novelists, Anthony Trollope was one of the most popular and critically acclaimed of them all. Even today, his Chronicles of Barsetshire series is widely read, as are his other novels, many of which deal with criticisms of English culture at the time, from its politics to its customs and norms.

What could have happened to dear Trollope at or about the time of his writing Sir Harry H. of H, there's no knowing....a mystery why this story is steeped in such utter hopelessness and consequent despair......a true mystery....that made me quite sad.....why would he depict so great an obstinacy which ends up destroying a family that could otherwise have survived bigger ills, particularly when there seemed to be so much togetherness and deep love in them?????? P:S: I geatly enjoyed the writing itself, specially the asides and some of the more "humorous" comments.

Sir Harry Hotspur of Humblethwaite Anthony Trollope 9781523203345 Books Reviews

I simply didn't like the way this book ended, and that ruined it for me. The ending seemed unbelievable and depressing, both. It made me decide to take a break from Trollope books for a while. I've loved most of them.
Although this is not one of Trollope's better known novels, a group I belong to recommended it. The many twists and turns and character insights made it a thoroughly enjoyable read.
Enjoyable but I found Emily Hotspur aggravating.
Like Small House there is no happy ending...it is a warning and more people should heed it. It is worth the sorrow for the lesson and the prose, but you have been warned.
The conflict between Sir Harry and his daughter over a worthless suitor could have been written yesterday. Trollope's descriptions of the father's devotion and pain, the daughter's struggle for independence and blindness toward her lover's flaws, are timeless.
"Sir Harry Hotspur of Humblethwaite" is a novel that is more depressing than most Anthony Trollope I have read. I am a great fan of this author, but never read anything that does not have at least a glimmer of hope at its ending, never mind a "happy ending." Although most of Trollope's other novels contain many sad or trying circumstances for the characters, usually the protagonists fight against their bad fate and win either material or moral victories.
In "SIr Harry" the main theme is that someone who is born a "gentleman" is not necessarily a moral or ethical person. The tragedy in this story develops because an upper-class man is left without a male heir on the death of his son, and leaves his considerable property to his daughter. However, under the prevailing rules, the daughter is expected to marry a titled aristocrat and hand over her inheritance to him. The only man who offers is a scoundrel. Nevertheless, the hapless young woman thinks she loves him and disaster results. This novel is an indictment of the class system in Trollope's time. But since none of the characters are able to evade the sad fate that comes from blind adherence to the accepted rules, everyone is unhappy. So is the reader. Missing in this story is one character who might have challenged the system or risen above it to give us hope of the future. This happens in other Trollope novels but not here. Too bad!

For Trollope fans, it is worth reading if only for the contrast to his greater works.
I thought this was going to be a story of redemption, which bothered me, but I could have handled it better than what happened. It was hard to believe that a young girl would be so insanely self sacrificing to someone so undeserving, especially since she hardly knew him. She cooked up a fantasy in her head built on stubbornness and prayer and couldn't let go of it. I have seen Trollope create this kind of woman before and they always frustrate me. I hope they don't really exist in real life.
